Frequently Asked Questions

How is it different from an ice pack?

Ice packs do one thing: cold. The Isopress Kit does far more: cold and intermittent compression. The compression cycles automatically, creating a pumping effect that actively moves fluid through the lymphatic system. That fluid is what causes swelling. Clearing it is what speeds up recovery and it's the part ice packs can't do. The kit also holds therapeutic temperature for up to 60 minutes. Most ice packs are warm in 20 and then you're handling a melting mess!

Is it the same as what my physio uses in the clinic?

Same principle, yes. Cold compression is common practice in physiotherapy clinics across New Zealand. There are a range of different options, as well as hot & cold therapy - so it might not be exactly the same device.

Our kits are simple to use and cold compression only. We bring the same approach home, at a price you can own rather than rent.

Which body parts can I use it on?

The kit comes with one of six CryoCuffs: ankle, knee, shoulder, back, leg, and hand.

It has one central unit and as you want or need other cuffs, you can mix and match them. It's built for your whole active life, not just your next surgery.

When should I start using it after surgery?

As soon as your surgeon or physio gives the go-ahead. For most people that's within the first 24 to 72 hours post-op. That early window matters. Post-surgical swelling peaks at around 72 hours, and what happens in that period has a significant effect on the weeks that follow.

Check with your medical team first, but getting started early is generally the goal.

How long does each session take?

Most sessions run 20 to 60 minutes. The kit has preset functions so you don't need to time it yourself. Use it multiple times a day in the early stages of recovery, then as needed for training and maintenance.

How does it compare to renting a Game Ready?

Game Ready rental runs around $368 per fortnight. One month costs $736, and at the end of it you hand the machine back. Game Ready offer a range of different options, some far more high tech than Isopress and with a range of costs.

Isopress is $599 one off purchase. You own it, use it for every injury, every surgery, every long training block. You can mix and match cuffs, as well as share it with family.

My physio hasn't mentioned Isopress. Should I be concerned?

Not at all. Isopress is a direct-to-consumer brand and relatively new to the market. Please tell them about us!

Many physios are familiar with cold compression therapy as a category and recommend it regularly, they may just not have come across tour specific brand yet.

The underlying technology is the same principle used in clinical machines. If you're unsure, show your physio the product and ask whether cold compression therapy is appropriate for your recovery.

Is it safe to use at home without clinical supervision?

Yes. The kit is designed specifically for home use with preset safety functions including automatic cycling and timer controls. It is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Always follow your surgeon or physiotherapist's guidance on your recovery protocol, and use the kit as a complement to their advice.

I've only got one surgery coming up. Is it worth buying rather than renting?

For a single surgery, the maths still favours buying if your recovery runs longer than five to six weeks, which most joint replacements do.

Beyond that, the kit covers every future injury, every sore knee after a long ride, every training block that asks more than your body can easily clear.

Most customers find uses for it well beyond the original surgery but of course that is up to you!

Is it noisy? Can I use it at night?

The motorised pump produces a low hum during compression cycles. Most people find it easy to use while watching TV, reading, or resting.

Whether it would disturb a partner at night depends on the person, a short trial run before bed will tell you quickly.
